What if we went back in time, to a forgotten era when world music brought people together? A unique musical and cultural experience, where the melodies of yesteryear will resonate with a new intensity in this historic and emblematic place.
The Museum of Art and History of Judaism lights up for the Music Festival with a unique concert of Judeo-Arab music on June 21. The Yaïa ensemble, formed in 2013, takes us on a musical journey that explores the rich Judeo-Spanish and Judeo-Arab repertoire of the Levant and the Maghreb. The group consists of Leila Mendez on vocals and percussion, Michel Taïeb on guitar and percussion, Michel Schick on clarinets and saxophones, Jean-Laurent Cayzac on double bass and electric bass, and Khalid Kouhen on percussion. Together, they breathe new life into legendary and forgotten compositions, bearing witness to a time when the Jews of North Africa spoke, dreamed and sang in Arabic.
The concert will take place in the main courtyard of the museum, an intimate setting which lends itself perfectly to this music of feeling, both tragic and festive. Leila Mendez, with her light voice close to fado, leads the dance, surrounded by the harmonies of Michel Taïeb's guitar, the double bass of Jean-Laurent Cayzac, and the melodious breaths of Michel Schick. Khalid Kouhen's percussion adds rhythmic depth to this music where love and nostalgia hold a central place.
The event will be enhanced by the exceptional presence of guest singers Yaël Miller and Donia Berriri, bringing a touch of vocal diversity to this evening already rich in emotions. Spectators will thus have the opportunity to appreciate a varied and moving repertoire, ranging from vanished legends of Judeo-Arab musical heritage to more contemporary creations.
Also take advantage of this evening to discover or rediscover the museum's permanent collections, accessible free of charge for the occasion, and immerse yourself in Jewish history and culture through its works of art and artifacts.
