Auguste Herbin, the revealed master: the exhibition at the Montmartre Museum

Do not be fooled by appearances. Behind the apparent familiarity of these works exhibited at the Montmartre Museum, sometimes post-impressionist, cubist or Fauve, there is in reality one and the same artist. Auguste Herbin would be the best kept secret of the adventure of modern art, we are told. And indeed, even if his paintings are part of the largest collections in the world, it is clear that the public no longer remembers this immensely talented artist. Each canvas is a marvel, intense and vibrant colors, a perfect mastery of painting, almost pointillist at times, worked in smooth and purely geometric areas at others. From one room to another, you could swear you'll meet several artists, with a common thread, this unwavering attachment to color and beauty. Auguste Herbin is a tireless pioneer, passionate about all the pictorial innovations of his time. After a post-Impressionist period, he became one of the first Fauve painters in 1905, one of the first Cubist artists in 1908, then devoted himself to an increasingly radical abstraction, close to Op Art, before losing the criticism of his time by inventing a poetic alphabet, encapsulating behind the shapes and colors the letters of a universal language... An original and multiple work for this painter who was part of all the revolutions, today crowned with a new light.
