Video: L'Atelier Rouge by Henri Matisse, the exhibition arrives in Paris at the Fondation Vuitton,

Do you know the history of Matisse’s Atelier Rouge? The Louis Vuitton Foundation invites us to try to unravel its mystery by bringing together for the first time the pieces of the puzzle of this enigma of art history. The year is 1911. In the midst of preparing his Symphonic Interiors for the Russian collector Sergei Shchukin, the artist suddenly covers one of his canvases with a uniform scarlet color, a haunting Venetian red tending towards ocher, erasing a brush stroke the reality of the gray walls that surround it. Matisse does not realize what has happened... An impulse, a vision, an intuition? With L'Atelier rouge, the artist nevertheless created a revolutionary work and unknowingly introduced monochrome into the vocabulary of modern art. A shame when we know that the painting, shunned by buyers and remained in the hands of Matisse for sixteen long years, finally found a buyer in 1927 to decorate the ballroom of a London nightclub! Here, we are surrounded by the paintings from Matisse's workshop represented on this legendary painting, the Fauvist portrait of Young Sailor II which had not been exhibited in France for more than 30 years, the old mill placed almost carelessly on the ground in the original work. A few canvases, sculptures, more than a studio view, the work here sounds like an intense and vibrant mise en abyme of the imaginary space of a master of modern art.
