Six characters in search of an author, the audacity of the Comédie-Française!
The Comédie-Française presents a captivating rereading of Six characters in search of an author, an emblematic play by Luigi Pirandello. Marina Hands, passionate about the work of the Italian playwright, has created a bold and immersive production. By redesigning the stage space to include off-screen elements, she manages to intensify the theatrical experience, plunging us behind the scenes of the family drama playing out on stage.
The cast, led by actors such as Thierry Hancisse (the Father) and Clotilde de Bayser (the Mother), brings this complex and deeply human story to life. Fabrice Melquiot provides a modern and incisive translation, which retains all the tension and irony of the original.
The scenography by Chloé Bellemere, the costumes by Bethsabée Dreyfus and the lighting by Bertrand Couderc enhance this theatrical fresco. Echoing the confined rehearsals of “But what Comedy!” in 2021, Hands here questions the truth of theater in the face of representations of life, exploring how far stage illusion can go to reflect reality.
This show, which takes place at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier from June 5 to July 7, 2024, promises a profound reflection on the nature of art and the quest for identity, both for the characters and for the audience. A work not to be missed for all lovers of contemporary theater and innovative productions.
