A tour of the gardens of the museums of Isère
ISÈRE DEPARTMENT
Green Escapes: Isère Museums: The Garden Side
There are museums that are visited as much for their artworks as for their surroundings. In the network of departmental museums in Isère, eight of them house veritable havens of greenery, including courtyards, cloisters, landscaped terraces, and romantic estates. Open-air spaces, conceived as sensitive extensions of the visit, where contemplation continues under the trees, by a body of water, in the shade of an ancient wall, or amidst the fragrances of an enclosed garden.
Some of these gardens are protected as historical monuments, others have received the "Remarkable Garden" label,, like the park of the Domaine de Vizille,, a majestic theater of lawns, reflecting pools, and open vistas, or the garden of the Hébert Museum,, a haven of intimate coolness. There are also the hanging gardens of the former Sainte-Marie d’en-Haut convent – the Musée dauphinois, perched above Grenoble, or the flowering pleasure garden of Hector Berlioz’s birthplace, where music seems to float between two cypress trees. Not forgetting the garden of the Champollion Museum, delicately structured in the spirit of the 19th century.
Each place has its own atmosphere, its own light, its own connections. Isère unfolds a discreet and precious art of landscape design here, accompanying the gaze, inviting strolling, rest, or reading, extending the memory of the place through the senses.
These gardens are not mere decorations: they are open-air museums , living, evolving, inhabited by the seasons and the footsteps of the visitor.
