From a pristine white background emerge dark, powerful bodies with dramatic gestures. And though the formula is minimalist, it works and leaves a question growing within us: Where do these bodies come from? Do they originate from the canvas, a memory, or a projection? The artist's first solo exhibition in France, the installation reveals what preoccupies the artist Sungi Mlengeya: the persistence of gestures that carry the story of a life passed from hand to hand, from generation to generation. Negative space, at the heart of the artist's pictorial language, becomes a "sky": a field of projection where the roots of a heritage yet to be imagined are missing.
