Exhibition "Happy Retirement Dad," Rayane Mcirdi at the Frac Île-de-France, Le Plateau
Forty years in the factory, and one last day. Rayane Mcirdi filmed his father's retirement and turned it into an exhibition that you walk through standing up.
The film exists, but Le Plateau doesn't show it like a film. The artist has deconstructed it: chapters scattered throughout the space, scenes echoing each other from one room to the next, so that you never really sit down.
The subject could be summed up in three lines of social documentary. What Rayane Mcirdi does with it is something else entirely. Since his first films, he has worked with stories, memories, and anecdotes gathered from his family and from the residents of Asnières-sur-Seine and Gennevilliers, where he grew up, and he reenacts them at the boundary between documentary and fiction, with the people involved themselves. The camera remains at shoulder height and lets things unfold naturally.
The result is a rare quality: trajectories that connect Algeria and France without ever resorting to commentary, tenderness, solidarity, nostalgia, and above all, what remains unspoken.
The Directors' Fortnight had already noticed him in 2024. Yet this is his first solo exhibition in a Parisian institution, and the Frac Île-de-France has entrusted him with the entire Plateau space for five months. The exhibition is curated by Céline Poulin.
A man leaves the factory. We stay with him.
