Constellations exhibition at the Beyeler Foundation, in Peter Zumthor's new buildings

The Beyeler Foundation is expanding and exhibiting approximately 230 works from its collection. The new Wyss Museum, designed by Peter Zumthor, opens alongside them.

Riehen, on the outskirts of Basel. Since 1997, the foundation had been housed in Renzo Piano's long glass building, situated beside a water lily pond. It now occupies a complex: this building, the new Wyss Museum by Peter Zumthor, an expanded park, and restored historic buildings.

For the inauguration, the foundation is not bringing in a celebrity guest. It is showcasing its collection, and showcasing it like never before: approximately 230 works, the largest presentation it has ever given. Monet, Picasso, Calder, Miró, Magritte, Giacometti, Rothko, de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, Louise Bourgeois, Gerhard Richter, Marlene Dumas, Wolfgang Tillmans, and some twenty others.

The title comes from Alexander Calder's 1943 work, *Constellations*, and it encapsulates the principle: works grouped by affinity rather than by school, and groups that dissolve and reform with the changing seasons. The installation evolves throughout the exhibition. In other words, you won't see the same thing in February as you will in June.

This is the Beyeler approach: not to buy anything at great expense, but to open and reopen one's own drawers, and to let the architecture do the rest.
