Artemisia Gentileschi Exhibition at the Museum of the Innocents, Florence
Museum of the Innocents
From October 21, 2026 to April 4, 2027
The Museum of the Innocents in Florence is dedicating an exhibition to Artemisia Gentileschi's Florentine years, the most successful of her career, when she painted for the Medici.
She arrived in Florence in 1613, at the age of twenty, with a rape trial behind her, the minutes of which had been read throughout Italy. Three years later, she became the first woman admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts. It is these years that the exhibition recounts, the years when Artemisia Gentileschi signed for the Medici, ran her own studio, and learned to read and write. Her heroines have laundresses' forearms and blades that carry considerable weight. The raking light comes from Caravaggio, two of whose paintings accompany the exhibition.
