Signac exhibition, symphony of colors at the Kunsthal Rotterdam
KUNSTHAL ROTTERDAM
From October 24, 2026 to February 28, 2027
The Kunsthal Rotterdam is dedicating an exhibition to Paul Signac, for whom Divisionism was less a matter of optics than a matter of boats.
He owned dozens of them throughout his life, sailed tirelessly, and painted ports as others keep a journal. The Kunsthal Rotterdam presents the most comprehensive overview ever shown in the Netherlands, structured around two canvases that echo each other, painted fifteen years apart. The Port at Sunset, Opus 236, painted in Saint-Tropez in 1892, when the brushstrokes were still tightly packed and the painting bore a number like a musical score. And The Port of Rotterdam, from 1907, where the mosaic has expanded, loosened, almost unbound. In between, Signac wrote the manifesto of the movement and presided over the Salon des Indépendants for twenty years.
