Hals - Rembrandt exhibition at the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem
FRANS HALS MUSEUM
From November 6, 2026 to February 28, 2027
The Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem is presenting, for the first time, a juxtaposition of Frans Hals and Rembrandt, two men of the same generation who never painted the human face in the same way.
In Frans Hals's work, everything is swift: the brushstrokes remain visible, laughter is captured on the fly, and it took two centuries for this nonchalance to be recognized as virtuosity. In Rembrandt's work, the opposite: the paint thickens, the shadows deepen, and each aging self-portrait resembles a forced confession. Both died penniless, one in Haarlem, the other in Amsterdam. The encounter took place at Hals's home, within the walls of the almshouse where he painted the elderly regents with a cruelty that spared no one.
